'Plastic free' cup lining technology trialled by Detpak

Continuing to operate at the forefront of innovation for sustainable packaging, Detpak is constantly assessing new cup technologies.

Detpak has recently manufactured cups utilising the latex-based polymer lining from Europe that claims to be ‘plastic free’. Trials are now occurring to confirm the product performance and true recyclability in existing infrastructure, however the validity of the environmental claims is still the subject of much debate. This technology is available after a number of false starts in recent years but it still in the early commercialisation stages and requires a significant price premium. Detpak is working with independent researchers to validate this technology and other competing coatings, and will continue to bring the best solutions to the market.

As the issue of recycling cups is not only in the lining, but also in the cup shape and how they act in a MRF, (read more, Behind the scenes of a MRF) any new technology will still use the existing Planet Ark endorsed RecycleMe™ System to collect and transport the used cups to a paper mill.

The RecycleMe™ System remains the only system guaranteeing collected cups will be recycled and can live again as paper products, within existing infrastructure.
