CASE STUDIES

White Wings is one of Australia’s most iconic baking brands, trusted by generations of home bakers with quality flour, baking mixes and ingredients since 1898.

The Problem

White Wings required packaging that maintained its premium metallic shelf appeal while meeting growing sustainability and recyclability expectations.

The existing solution relied on metallised PET laminates, which delivered strong visual impact but did not align with APCO kerbside recyclability targets and added material complexity.

The key challenge was developing a packaging solution that preserved the brand's distinctive metallic finish to stand out on shelf, while also being recyclable, durable enough to withstand handling throughout the supply chain, and suitable for large-scale production.

The Solution

At Detpak’s Heshan manufacturing site, a fully integrated solution was developed, combining inline cold foiling with water-based flexographic printing and targeted process optimisation.

This industrialised inline cold foiling capability further strengthens Detpak’s premium packaging decoration offering. While cold foiling is commonly used in label production and smaller-format print applications, Detpak has successfully extended the technology to larger-format printing on 2-ply bags.

Key elements of the solution included applying aluminium foil inline during the printing process, transitioning to water-based inks and coatings, and optimising drying, print performance, tension control and foil transfer to achieve consistent, high-quality production at scale.

The Results

The final solution enabled White Wings to transition to a recyclable paper-based packaging format aligned with APCO targets, while removing approximately 15 metric tonnes of single-use plastic annually and maintaining its premium metallic shelf presence. At the same time, production achieved high quality and consistency, with qualification rates exceeding 90 percent and improving toward 95 percent, alongside greater operational efficiency through reduced processing steps and energy use, ultimately supporting a successful in-market roll-out across Australia from April 2026.
