RecycleMe Cup Trials
Our RecycleMeTM cups were trialled in Australian cafes during August.
Consumer learnings from these trials have validated a combined approach to this complex issue and provided great insights as to how to rollout this initiative successfully. We are now working on the final step in this process by optimising the bin design to allow for liquid separation, cup stacking and lid collection.
Some of the key learnings from a local café level proved:
· Engagement - Consumers expressed concern about the environmental impact of paper cups on landfill.
· The Blue Bin concept & accessibility – Education proved an increase in the rate of cups captured throughout the duration of the campaign. The ‘Blue’ Paper and Cardboard collection stream was largely understood by consumers throughout the campaign.
· Collection system of cups – There was minimal levels of lid contamination on the paper cup section of the bin and the level of liquid was lower than expected.
· Return rate - A closed collection environment is the most effective way to capture the valuable paper cup waste demonstrating the highest collection rates of up to 71%. Other locations had an increase over the week allowing time for the education of the initiative to take effect.
