OTR is an Australian convenience retail company, with a national network of over 200 convenience outlets across South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia.
The Challenge:
When Like many retailers, OTR has relied on packaging solutions that were standard across the industry; PE lined Hot Cups, plastic lids, and clear plastic Cold Cups. These items were familiar, cost effective, and performed reliably in store and on-the-go. However, upcoming Single Use Problematic Plastics (SUPPs) legislation would render these items ineligible to be used across the country. OTR required a compliant, sustainable hot and cold cup solution that not only met legislative needs, but the needs of their customers.
OTR required a packaging partner who could help navigate this complex transition, balancing sustainability, functionanlity, and customer expectations without disrupting supply.
The Solution:
To meet sustainability goals and to comply with upcoming legislation, Detpak guided OTR through the transition from PE lined Hot Cups to PLA Lined alternatives. PLA Lined Hot Cups are a Commercially Compostable Hot Cup solution that doesn't compromise on quality and durability. Cold Cups now feature Clear PLA in place of traditional plastic, ensuring compliance while maintaining clarity and strength.
Detpak worked with OTR to respond to customer feedback and operational needs. CPLA lids were introduced, offering an experience expected from OTR customers. The Cold Cup and Lid solution was refined, ensuring that the new materials delivered the same visual appeal and usability as their previous offering.
The Result:
The partnership between Detpak and OTR delivered measurable improvements across sustainability and customer experience. By transitioning to compostable PLA Lined Hot Cups and CPLA Lids, OTR complied with SUPPs legislation while reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility.
